Barely 72 hours after the gruesome murder of Capt. Maxwell Adam Mahama at Denkyira Obuasi another unfortunate situation has happened at the Sekondi Zongo in the Western Region which nearly resulted in the death of a young Muslim.
According to an eye witness and the spokesperson of the Zongo Chief of Sekondi, Mohammed Sani, aka Mozanto one Muawiya Abubakar with the help of another gentleman by name Balla stabbed a man by name Husain in the chest in an attempt to assassinate his (Husain’s) uncle. Another man also sustained injury to his arm.
According to Mozanto there has been a long standing dispute between the family of the attacker and that of the victim. In view of the misunderstanding the police came up with an order debarring all preachers from holding their programmes on the streets.
However one Malam Muqaddasu, leader of one of the factions defied the order and continued with his tafseer which culminated in the police moving there to remind him of the ban.
Upon the visit from the Police Malam Muqaddasu went to the Zongo chief Wednesday morning and sought for permission to have his tafseer in the Central Mosque where the Regional Chief Imam also holds his.
The Zongo chief, Malam Muhammad Yusuf Ibrahim V was of the opinion there would not be any conflict if he allows Malam Muqaddasu to operate from the mosque since his time and that of the chief Imam are different. Muqaddasu always holds his programme at Zuhr time, thus between 1pm and 3pm whilst the chief Imam also takes the Asr time of 3pm to 5pm.
According to Mohammed Sani this arrangement did not go down well with the family of the chief imam who reported the issue to the police asking them to intervene.
Upon enquiries Malam Muqaddasu informed the police that he was permitted by the overlord of the community to have his tafseer in the mosque; this was corroborated by the chief who confirmed it by a memo. Malam Muqaddasu therefore saw it as a confirmation to continue with his tafseer.
This did not go down well with some youth from the other party who saw it as an affront to the dignity of the chief imam and therefore attacked Malam Muqaddasu with a knife. In his quest to save the life of his teacher and uncle Husain shielded him with his body and was thus stabbed in the chest. He has since reported the incident to the police.
When mytawheedonline.com reached a spokesperson of the Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh khalilur Rahmaan he confirmed the story but initially denied knowledge of any violence that took place saying he hasn’t been home and does not know what has happened in his absence.
He mentioned that the chief Imam adhered to the police order and therefore stopped him from public preaching and he respectfully agreed, but the unfortunate story ensued when Muqaddasu went ahead to do away with the Imam’s instruction.
“Who has power over the activities of the mosque, should it be the traditional chief or the Regional Chief Imam”? Sheikh Khalil asked. “If the chief had consulted the imam on this issue this unfortunate incident would not have happened.” He added.
Subsequently the feuding parties were invited by the Western Regional Security Council (REGSEC) where the Regional Minister, Dr. Kweku Afriyie himself superintended over the resolution of the impasse.
it was finally agreed that the chief imam should continue running his programme at the Central Mosque whilst Malam Muqaddasu was allowed to go back and do his programme in front of his house.
Meanwhile Malam Muqaddasu announced at the meeting that he had forgiven the young men who attacked and inflicted knife wounds on his nephew and therefore has agreed to withdraw the case from the police.
Present at the meeting were the Regional commanders of the Ghana Police, Immigration, BNI, Prisons, as well as traditional and religious leadership of the Muslim community.
